A super easy and healthy stew specifically made for your best furry friend, featuring beef, sweet potato, green beans, peas, blueberries, rice, and oats.
This is obviously not a plant-based or vegan recipe post. And yet, I want to share this recipe with you because I know how hard it is to find wholesome dog food that my dog will willingly eat.
Kiska is very finicky. Seriously, she sniffs everything I give to her as if I’m trying to poison her. If it doesn’t smell right, she won’t even taste it.
She’s always been hesitant with eating her meals, especially when we’re traveling or camping. But when her sister and best pal passed away a couple of months ago, she refused to eat anything. She’s slowly recovering, but it was a devastating loss for all of us.
The reason I’m sharing this post and this recipe is because sometimes our dogs get bored with the food we give them. And sometimes, they just won’t eat what we’re offering. So we have to try different things. At first, she couldn’t get enough of my Chicken Stew for Dogs. She loved it! Both of our dogs did. But then, all of a sudden, Kiska no longer wanted it.
So, we decided maybe it was time for a change. I purchased some beef and made this recipe. She actually came over to the counter where the Instant Pot was depressurizing and sniffed. And she laid down, and waited patiently for her bowl. That’s when I knew she just needed something different.
I don’t post my dog recipes on Instagram or Facebook because I like to promote plant-based and vegan recipes. This is obviously the opposite of that. And yet, I wanted to share this option with you since Kiska loves it so much. So, if you are vegan, please please please forgive me for posting Kiska’s favorite dog food recipe.
This Instant Pot Beef Stew for Dogs couldn’t be more simple. It contains only whole food ingredients, including beef, rice, oats, sweet potato, green beans, peas, and blueberries. I used to make dog food two or three times a month, depending on the month. But now that we only have Kiska, I only make this every three weeks or so. It really depends on how much food your dog needs to thrive.
To make this Instant Pot Beef Stew for Dogs, add all of the ingredients to the insert of your Instant Pot. Set it for 10 minutes on Manual or High Pressure and allow it to release the pressure naturally. This takes about 40 minutes, start to finish, but it’s mostly hands off.
When the pin drops indicating pressure is fully released, remove the lid, and stir all of the ingredients until well combined. My dog normally eats one cup of food twice a day. So I combine ½ cup kibble and ½ cup of this beef stew or the chicken stew. I normally heat up water in my kettle and add one to two tablespoons to mix it together. The hot water helps bring the stew to room temperature, though you can also use a microwave to warm it up.
This Instant Pot Beef Stew for Dogs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. For longer-term storage, transfer to freezer-safe containers and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight and use as you normally would.
I hope your dog enjoys this Instant Pot Beef Stew for Dogs as much as Kiska does.

Ingredients
- 2½ cups water
- 2 – 2½ pounds sirloin, chuck roast, or ground beef*
- 1 cup white or light brown rice**
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 2 cups sweet potato, peeled and chopped
- 2 cups green beans
- 2 cups blueberries
- 1 cup green peas
Instructions
- Pour in the water, followed by all of the remaining ingredients in order (starting with the beef on the bottom) to the insert of your Instant Pot.
- Lock the lid in place and ensure the sealing knob is turned to sealing.
- Cook on High Pressure for 10 minutes, allow the pressure to release naturally.
- Remove the lid, and stir all of the ingredients until well combined.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- To serve this stew for my dog, I stir together 50% kibble and 50% stew. So, since she eats 1 cup of food, I combine ½ cup kibble and ½ cup stew. Feel free to add 1-2 Tbsp of water to help combine.
- For longer-term storage, transfer to freezer-safe containers and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
Notes
* If using steak or roast, you can either cube it before cooking or break it up after cooking. Either method works.
** If using regular brown rice, cook on High Pressure for 20 minutes. Natural release.

Pingback: 5 Homemade Dog Food Recipes for Senior Dogs: Soft and Nutritious
My dog love this! In the past I tried feeding her raw, she wouldn’t eat it,. I then tried good quality kibble different brands, she would eventually eat it but was very disinterested. One I started making this recipe she is like a new dog. So much more energy, she’s very excited about meal times and just overall happier. I sometimes add an egg or extra things to make sure she gets all her nutrients. This is a wonderful recipe.
I am so glad your dog enjoys this stew! Thank you for letting me know.
Hello! I am currently feeding my yorkie and toy poodle farmers dog, they do not get any kibble. Is it okay to feed them this alone?
Hi, Tanya. I’m not a veterinarian; but dogs are omnivores. So I don’t see why you can’t feed your dog this alone, so long as you make sure he’s getting the nutrients he needs.
I thought sweet peas were toxic. Your recipe says green peas but there’s sweet peas in the photo. Can you please clarify?
I will defer to Rachele, but it is my understanding that it is the flowers of the sweet pea plant that are toxic. The sweet pea plant and pea plant are not the same. These apparently get confused a lot.
Thanks, Judy. I appreciate your note. You are 100% correct. Peas are okay, but the stems and flowers are not.
I’m wondering if homemade food is a good way to feed our fur babies because it changes their bowel habits, I for one don’t care to clean up mushy mess..How do you keep your dog with a normal firm stool?
Hi, MM. Good call. Better to be safe than sorry. Always avoid something you aren’t sure about. Peas as a vegetable are safe. But sweet peas (the flowering plant) are toxic. According to Taste of the Wild, “Sweet peas — the flowering, nonedible plant that isn’t a vegetable — should always be avoided. Sweet peas contain a toxin called aminopropionitrile, which can cause weakness, lethargy, seizures and even death. Even a single sweet pea contains enough aminopropionitrile to make your dog seriously ill. If you suspect that your dog has ingested aminopropionitrile or any other poison, call the Pet Poison Helpline IMMEDIATELY at (855) 764-7661.”
Our dogs, Dala and Betty, give this recipe 5 stars! We substituted venison for the beef. About to try the chicken version. Any reason not to add blueberries to the chicken stew recipe?
Hi, Judy. I’m so glad they like this stew! And no reason blueberries aren’t added to the chicken recipe – other than color. Also, Kiska was super finicky so I tried to mix things up with the different batches so that it wasn’t the same boring meal each time. Enjoy!
I did make the chicken stew today with the blueberries. All paws approve! Thank you so much for sharing these recipes.
Do you know the nutritional breakdown? My 16 yr old snorkie has kidney issues
Hi, Karen. I don’t have the nutritional breakdown for this recipe. You can copy the recipe link into a website that calculates it for you, if you need to evaluate it for your snorkie.
I’ve made your beef stew and chicken for my dog,, she loves them!!!! My family thought it was crazy when I was making my dog food in the instant pot, but our daughter fed her dogs these meals and the older of the two has lost weight, so she is now making these meals for her dogs😂! Thank you!
Hi, Jackie. You are most welcome! I’m so glad your dog enjoys the beef and chicken stews.
Each time I make this I get the burn warning. I put ingredients in as mentioned. I have to open mix then put it back on low pressure. All of this makes it take so long. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
If this is main food for my 75lb rescue (husky / lab /terrier mix) What additional supplements do i need to add to keep my pet nutritional balance.
Thanks you
Hi, Odie. I always feed my dog half stew and half kibble to ensure she gets plenty of hard food to keep her teeth healthy and strong, as well as provide balanced nutrition. Dogs are omnivores, meaning they can eat whatever. But if you’re looking for optimal nutrition, I highly recommend you research and include specific items that provide the nutrition necessary for your dog’s health. For instance, you may find that flax oil or flaxseed is beneficial. Just like people, every dog is different, is at different stages of their life (puppy versus senior) and has different dietary needs.
Vitamins, particularly Calcium. I’ve read that you can add in crushed egg shells. There is a powder form made for dogs but I have no idea what the formula is to know how much to add. Your vet could tell you or give other suggestions.
i don’t have a pressure cooker or instant pot….can i use my slow cooker or just cook on top of stove
thank you
Hello, Roberta.
Yes, a slow cooker should also work. Simply cover and cook the stew until the meat is fully cooked and tender, about 6-8 hours, depending on the temperature settings.
You can also cook it stovetop. In a large pot, combine all of the ingredients except the oats. Bring the mixture to a low boil on medium high heat. Then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Cook for about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. Stir in the oats and cook another 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. You’ll know it’s ready when the meat is tender and the stew has a light sauce or gravy.
My 13 year old loves this recipe. She doesn’t ordinarily eat berries but doesn’t notice them in this stew. She shakes when I am preparing and turns in circles repeatedly before I’m able to set it down.
Hi, Mia. I’m really glad your pup loves this stew. Thanks for stopping by and for commenting.
