Simple Vegan Gravy

Try this simple 5-minute gravy made with vegetable broth, flour, and seasonings.  Full of flavor, this gravy is suitable for any recipe or meal requiring “chicken” or “turkey” gravy.  Fantastic on baked or mashed potatoes, stuffing, veggie roasts, thanksgiving or Christmas feasts, and more.  Naturally plant-based, vegan, oil-free, and can be made gluten-free!

I can put this Simple Vegan Gravy on everything! Well, okay, maybe not everything. But it is that good. And yet, it is one of the easiest recipes to make on my blog. And the results are truly perfection every single time.

A huge bonus is that it doesn’t take a whole lot of time.  Once you gather your ingredients, this Simple Vegan Gravy can be made in a saucepan on the stovetop in about five minutes flat.  Unless your stove heats up slow, then it’ll take a few extra minutes.

The key is to combine the ingredients before you turn the stove on.  This prevents any lumpiness or uneven blotchy flour clumps in your gravy.

One of the best parts of this recipe is that it uses seven pantry staples.  This Simple Vegan Gravy recipe is made with Umami Vegetable Broth, flour, and a myriad of seasonings.

Once you whisk all of the ingredients together, turn the heat on and stir occasionally.  It’s important to taste the mixture, and adjust seasonings to your preference.  If you prefer a little more garlic or nutritional yeast, add it in.  Need more salt, go for it.

Once the liquid mixture begins to boil, continue to stir to prevent scorching or uneven cooking.

And voila! Just like that, your Simple Vegan Gravy is ready.

Now that you have this incredibly silky smooth vegan gravy, how will you enjoy it?

May I recommend pouring it over vegan chick’n patties or nuggets, turk’y seiten, baked potato, mashed potatoes, stuffing or dressing, veggie roasts, and more.

It’s an incredible accompaniment to your Thanksgiving, Christmas, and holiday feasts.  I love that this Simple Vegan Gravy is naturally plant-based, vegan, oil-free, and can be made gluten-free by using a cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend!

I hope you enjoy this Simple Vegan Gravy as much as I do.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Umami Vegetable Broth
  • 3 Tbsp flour*
  • 1½ Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp poultry seasoning
  • salt and pepper to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk all the ingredients together in a saucepan (or microwave-safe bowl**) until they are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth over medium-high heat.  (Any lumpiness will result in lumpy gravy.)
  2. Taste and adjust the seasonings, as desired.
  3. Turn the stove onto medium-high heat and stir occasionally until the mixture thickens into a smooth gravy, about 5-7 minutes.  Add 1-2 Tbsp of broth if the gravy is too thick.  Remove from heat.
  4. Enjoy immediately or store in an air-tight container for up to 1 week.

Notes

* I’ve successfully used white wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and King Arthur’s gluten-free flour blend.  The key here is to whisk

** I think the gravy is best when whisked over the stove, but you can also make this gravy in the microwave.  Whisk all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl until they are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.  Heat on high power for 3-5 minutes, whisking or stirring every 40-45 seconds. The time will vary depending on the wattage.

Makes about 2 cups.
