Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits

A nutritious and delicious dog treat your dog will enjoy, featuring whole wheat flour, pure pumpkin, peanut butter, and flax seeds. These can be made large or small, cut in squares or cut out in cute shapes.

Do you have any fur babies?

We have one.  Her name is Kiska and she’s a 14-year-old Australian Shephard mix.  We’re not sure who her dad is but we believe he might have been a golden retriever.  We just know she’s super sweet and we simply adore her.

This can sometimes become a problem since my husband loves to spoil her with treats.  For this reason, I try to keep some healthier treats on hand; and boy does she loves these Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits!!

So, yes, these little treats are fun, tasty, and easy to make.  These Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits are also made with whole natural foods – nothing artificial or unnecessary.

Plus, the list of ingredients is fairly short – ground flaxseed, hot water, whole wheat flour, pure pumpkin, and natural peanut butter – with just a touch of cinnamon.

Flaxseeds are loaded with healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, protein, and fiber.  They aid in digestion, can improve cardiovascular health, and may help prevent cancer. They may also help lower blood pressure, improve kidney function, and maintain a dog’s healthy skin and coat. (PETMD)

I use whole wheat flour, though you can substitute with most flours, including oat flour, spelt flour, white whole wheat flour, white flour, rye flour, etc.

Pumpkin contains soluble fiber which aids in digestion.  Just be sure that you only use pure pumpkin – canned pumpkin puree or home-cooked fresh pumpkin.  You can also use cooked butternut squash or sweet potatoes.  You may need to adjust the amount of water needed if using sweet potatoes.

Same thing goes with the peanut butter.  Dogs love peanut butter, but they don’t love the added ingredients often added to peanut butter. So I recommend only using a natural peanut butter that doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients, especially Xylitol, which can be poisonous to dogs. (PETMD)

Once you combined the ingredients, mix or knead them together to form a soft dough. Roll it out on a floured surface and use cookie cutters to create cute little dog treats.  Though let’s be honest. I don’t think our dogs actually notice the shape at all.

If you don’t want to use cookie cutters, you can also cut the dough into squares, triangles, or rectangles with a knife or pizza cutter. It will make the process even easier.

Transfer the biscuits to a lined baking sheet and bake until the biscuits are dry and hard, about 25-30 minutes, depending on the size. Once cool, these Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits can be stored in an air-tight container for up to one week. You can also store these biscuits in the refrigerator or freezer.

If you need a really great but inexpensive gift for a friend or family’s beloved pet, these Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits can be dressed up and make the perfect wholesome dog treat on their special day. Simply make larger treats and then after they’re baked and cooled, tie a ribbon around a stack.

Voila! Merry Christmas! Happy Birthday! Happy “I adopted a dog” day! Whatever the occasion, these treats will be sure to win their dog’s affection.

I hope you enjoy this Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits as much as my dog does.

    1. Hi, Crystal. It’s a typo I have corrected now. I initially made these biscuits with a touch of maple syrup, but learned quickly that my dog didn’t care whether they had any sweetness or not. So I no longer include any sugar. They’re healthier and she loves them. Thank you for stopping by. I hope you try these Healthy Pumpkin Dog Biscuits
